Die Nestlingsnahrung von Kohl-, Tannen-, Alpen- und Haubenmeisen im Lärche-Arvenwald des Engadins

Abstract:

Nestling food of tits (Parus major, P. ater, P. montanus, P. cristatus) in a subalpine Larici-Cembretum of the Upper Engadine, Switzerland. - In the Upper Engadine valley nestling diet of four tit species was investigated in subalpine coniferous forests from 1982 to 1992. Nestling food of P. ater, P. montanus, and P. cristatus consists to a large degree on spiders and Homoptera. P. major is clearly separated from other tit species, including more beetles and more moths but no Homoptera in the diet. In years of gradation of the larch bud moth proportion of caterpillars in nestling food is higher but still low compared to lowland populations, especially in P. major and P. cristatus. Concerning spiders tits preferred clearly different species as prey. Cluster analysis indicates a clear separation of P. major and somewhat less of P. cristatus; within P. montanus and P. ater separation is stronger for years than for species. Prey size depends strongly on the type of prey. Within spiders the preferred prey size increases gradually from P. ater to P. montanus and to P. cristatus, and, finally to P. major.
